THE ALTARPIECE BY NATEE UTARIT

Abstract

This research aims to study The Altarpiece painting series by Natee Utarit, due to the complexity of the art works’ content, it’s impossible to comprehend this works from a superficial consideration. The study is a qualitative research study, consisting of the data on Christian altarpieces, contemporary art in the form of altarpieces, Christianity and Buddhism beliefs, western philosophical concepts: Existentialism, Commodity Fetishism and Memento Mori. Along with the search for symbolic meanings and myths, including storytelling through images in altarpieces. Moreover, the information is used as an important tool in the interpretation of the case study in conjunction with the artist’s concepts and his creative methods. The result shows that although these works have physical features like altarpieces but it’s not a created work for Christianity. In addition, these paintings do not aim to present the story that appears in the Bible. Although it was found paintings of important figures in Christianity. However, the artist uses these traits to convey a meaning that is intended to present the interconnection between the Western culture and the Eastern culture that has continued from the past to the present. Furthermore, the artist also like to use the art works as a medium to harmonize the differences between the two cultures to connect with each other. As a result, the series of paintings reflects various aspects of society, culture, philosophy, religion and politics.

การวิจัยนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาผลงานจิตรกรรมชุด The Altarpiece โดย นที อุตฤทธิ์ เนื่องจากผลงานดังกล่าวมีความซับซ้อนของเนื้อหาอยู่มาก ทำให้ไม่สามารถทำความเข้าใจได้จาก การพิจารณาผลงานอย่างผิวเผิน โดยผู้วิจัยใช้การศึกษาแบบการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ อาศัยแหล่งอ้างอิงจากเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้องในประเด็นเกี่ยวกับ ภาพประดับแท่นบูชาของคริสต์ศาสนา ศิลปะร่วมสมัย ที่มีลักษณะอย่างภาพประดับแท่นบูชา ความเชื่อทางคริสต์ศาสนากับพุทธศาสนา แนวความคิด ทางปรัชญาตะวันตก เช่น อัตถิภาวนิยม (Existentialism) ลัทธิบูชาสินค้า (Commodity Fetishism) และมรณานุสติ (Memento Mori) รวมทั้งการค้นหาความหมายเชิงสัญญะและมายาคติ ตลอดจนประเด็นการเล่าเรื่องผ่านภาพของผลงานจิตรกรรมประเภทภาพประดับแท่นบูชา มาเป็นเครื่องมือสำคัญในการประกอบการตีความภาพกรณีศึกษาร่วมกับการศึกษาแนวคิดและวิธีการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานของศิลปิน ทั้งนี้ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ผลงานชุด The Altarpiece ของนที อุตฤทธิ์ แม้มีลักษณะกายภาพของผลงานแบบภาพประดับแท่นบูชา แต่มิใช่ผลงานที่สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นเพื่อคริสต์ศาสนา มากกว่านั้น ผลงานยังมิได้มุ่งนำเสนอสาระสำคัญที่เกี่ยวกับเรื่องราวที่ปรากฏในพระคริสต์ธรรมคัมภีร์ แม้ว่าจะพบการวาดภาพบุคคลสำคัญในคริสต์ศาสนา ทว่าศิลปินกลับใช้ลักษณะทางกายภาพ และบุคคลในคริสต์ศาสนาดังกล่าวมาประกอบเพื่อตั้งใจนำเสนอความเชื่อมโยงระหว่างโลกตะวันตกกับโลกตะวันออกที่ดำเนินมาตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน ยิ่งไปกว่านั้น นทียังนิยมใช้การหยิบยืมผลงานศิลปะมาเป็นตัวประสานความแตกต่างระหว่างสองวัฒนธรรมให้เชื่อมโยงซึ่งกันและกัน จึงส่งผลให้ ผลงานชุดนี้สะท้อนแง่มุมอันหลากหลายทั้งด้านสังคม วัฒนธรรม ปรัชญา ศาสนา และการเมือง
