INTERSTITIAL PUBLIC SPACE IN TRANSIT: A CASE STUDY OF IN-BETWEEN SPACES AROUND MRT STATION ENTRANCES

Abstract

This research investigates the role and potential of small-scale public spaces embedded within urban transit environments, focusing on the in-between areas surrounding entrances and exits of underground MRT stations in Bangkok. These spaces are often overlooked as transient zones and are rarely designed to support public functions. Through physical surveys, spatial analysis, and behavioral observations at 22 MRT stations, the study examines how these interstitial spaces are used, their physical characteristics, and their capacity to function as urban public spaces.

The findings indicate that the spatial quality and usage of these areas vary significantly depending on architectural design, infrastructural context, and surrounding environment. When appropriately designed and managed, these in-between spaces can serve as vibrant micro-public spaces that enhance pedestrian experience, support transit connectivity, and contribute to the livability and social fabric of the city.

งานวิจัยนี้มุ่งศึกษาบทบาทและศักยภาพของพื้นที่สาธารณะขนาดเล็กที่แทรกตัวอยู่ในบริบทของการเดินทางในเมือง โดยเฉพาะพื้นที่ระหว่างทางเข้าออกสถานีรถไฟฟ้าใต้ดิน MRT ในเขตกรุงเทพมหานคร ซึ่งมักมีลักษณะเป็นพื้นที่ผ่านทางชั่วคราว และไม่ได้รับการออกแบบให้รองรับกิจกรรมสาธารณะอย่างเต็มที่ การศึกษานี้เน้นการสำรวจเชิงกายภาพ การวิเคราะห์เชิงพื้นที่ และการสังเกตพฤติกรรมการใช้งานของผู้คน ณ พื้นที่รอบสถานีรถไฟฟ้าใต้ดินจำนวน 22 แห่ง เพื่อทำความเข้าใจถึงรูปแบบการใช้พื้นที่ คุณลักษณะทางกายภาพ และศักยภาพของพื้นที่ระหว่างทาง ในการนำมาเป็น “พื้นที่สาธารณะที่แทรกตัวอยู่ระหว่างทาง” (Interstitial public space)

ผลการศึกษาพบว่าพื้นที่ดังกล่าวมีความหลากหลายในแง่ ระดับการใช้งาน และความเชื่อมโยงกับบริบทโดยรอบ ทั้งนี้ปัจจัยสำคัญที่ส่งผลต่อศักยภาพของพื้นที่ ได้แก่ การออกแบบทางสถาปัตยกรรม การจัดการโครงสร้างพื้นฐาน และสภาพแวดล้อมของพื้นที่ หากมีการออกแบบและจัดการอย่างเหมาะสม พื้นที่เหล่านี้สามารถกลายเป็นพื้นที่สาธารณะขนาดเล็กที่มีชีวิตชีวา สนับสนุนการเดินเท้า เพิ่มประสิทธิภาพของระบบขนส่งมวลชน และยกระดับคุณภาพชีวิตในเมืองได้อย่างเป็นรูปธรรม
