CULTURAL DISTRICT’S ESSENSE, THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF BANGKOK: A CASE STUDY OF CHAROENKRUNG DISTRICT

Abstract

This research aims to 1) survey and collect concrete and abstract data on Charoenkrung cultural district 2) analyze the survey and gather data in the sense of district’s essence which later applied to product and service design within the cultural district through the experiment of creating design work 3) analyze and synthesis the outcome of creative assets into new knowledge in the field of art design by adapting cultural concepts into product and service design. The result of this research will provide the ability to adapt the cultural district’s essence to create a difference in the existing product and service design by the knowledge from experimental based creation from area’s identity and value.

The tools used for this research are quantitative and qualitative data collection by creating design work and exhibit to the public as survey, data collecting as well as gaining an acceptance and participation from government section and private agencies along with retrospective study by using pre- and post-tests.

The research shows that the symbolic value components that appeared within the district have significant importance in the way of cultural analysis essence study area, Charoenkrung. The analysis factors are the historical dimension, the aspect of the area as a “YAN” (unofficial district genre) and the multicultural community. Furthermore, a process of cultural compromise between traditional and contemporary values is an efficient way of designing. The analysis also discovered that the contrary between visual and abstract representation is the cultural district essence, influencing one another. The important keyword of creativity is “diversity”, “old and new”, and “traditional and contemporary”. The research shows that the merge of visual and abstract representatives, namely the merge of visual and abstract elements of culture, is an efficient design key from the cultural district essence as a design knowledge called DAV model, which is based on the analysis of historical and cultural dimensions, resulting a new knowledge in the design study.

โครงการวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) สำรวจและจัดเก็บข้อมูลองค์ประกอบรูปธรรมและนามธรรมของพื้นที่ย่านวัฒนธรรมเจริญกรุง 2) วิเคราะห์ผลการสำรวจและจัดเก็บข้อมูลในแง่หลักการแก่นความงามของพื้นที่ เพื่อประยุกต์ใช้ในการออกแบบสินค้าและบริการในพื้นที่ย่านวัฒนธรรม ผ่านการทดลองสร้างสรรค์ผลงานออกแบบ 3) วิเคราะห์และสังเคราะห์ผลการสร้างสรรค์เป็นองค์ความรู้ใหม่ด้านศิลปะการออกแบบ โดยประยุกต์แนวคิดเชิงวัฒนธรรมมาใช้ในการออกแบบออกแบบสินค้าและบริการจะสามารถประยุกต์ใช้สารัตถะย่านวัฒนธรรม และสามารถสร้างสรรค์งานออกแบบให้มีความแตกต่างจากงานออกแบบสินค้าและบริการที่มีอยู่ได้ ด้วยองค์ความรู้จากการสังเคราะห์กระบวนการทดลองสร้างสรรค์ผลงานออกแบบจากแก่นสารความงาม และอัตลักษณ์ของพื้นที่อย่างเป็นรูปธรรม

เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัย คือ การเก็บข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณและเชิงคุณภาพ ด้วยการทดลองสร้างสรรค์ผลงานออกแบบและจัดนิทรรศการเผยแพร่ผลงานเพื่อสำรวจความคิดเห็น การสร้างการยอมรับและการมีส่วนร่วมจากตัวแทนหน่วยงานรัฐและเอกชน และ การศึกษาผลย้อนกลับด้วยการใช้การแบบทดสอบก่อนและหลังเข้าร่วมการทดลอง

ผลการศึกษาพบว่า องค์ประกอบเชิงคุณค่าประเภทสัญลักษณ์ที่ปรากฏในพื้นที่ มีความสำคัญในการวิเคราะห์แก่นสารความงามจากพื้นที่ศึกษา (ย่านเจริญกรุง) โดยมีปัจจัยในการวิเคราะห์คือ มิติทางประวัติศาสตร์ มุมมองของพื้นที่ในแบบ “ย่าน” และชุมชนพหุวัฒนธรรม นอกจากนี้กระบวนการประนีประนอมทางวัฒนธรรมระหว่างค่านิยมแบบจารีต กับ ค่านิยมแบบร่วมสมัย เป็นแนวทางที่มีศักยภาพในการออกแบบ จากการวิเคราะห์ยังพบว่าสภาวะอันเป็นคู่ตรงข้าม 2 ประการ ระหว่าง ภาพตัวแทนความหมายเชิงรูปธรรม และ ภาพตัวแทนความหมายเชิงนามธรรม ในฐานะสัญลักษณ์ทางวัฒนธรรมที่ดำรงอยู่ท่ามกลางอิทธิพลที่ส่งต่อระหว่างกัน โดยเมื่อทดลองนำภาพแทนความหมายทั้ง 2 ประการ มาตีความด้วยวิธีการอุปมาอุปไมย พบว่า ผลงานที่สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นสามารถสื่อสารถึงอัตลักษณ์ของพื้นที่ย่านเจริญกรุงได้ โดยมีคีย์เวิร์ดสำคัญในการสร้างสรรค์คือ “ความหลากหลาย” “เก่าและใหม่” “ประเพณีและร่วมสมัย” ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การสมาทานคุณลักษณะที่ต่างต่างกันของ ภาพตัวแทนแบบรูปธรรม และ ภาพตัวแทนแบบนามธรรม โดยการผสมผสานระหว่างองค์ประกอบของวัฒนธรรม ที่จับต้องได้ และวัฒนธรรมที่จับต้องไม่ได้ เป็นหลักการออกแบบจากสารัตถะของย่านวัฒนธรรม ในฐานะองค์ความรู้ทางกระบวนการออกแบบ DAV Model จากการวิเคราะห์มิติทางประวัติศาสตร์และมิติสังคมวัฒนธรรม อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพในฐานะองค์ความรู้ใหม่ของการศึกษาด้านวิชาการออกแบบ
