CONCEPTS AND STYLES OF LOTUS BUD-TOPPED STUPAS IN THE PRESENT PERIOD

Abstract

A Study of Concept and Characters of the Construction of the Lotus-bud topped Stupas in the Present Time is aimed at studying the change in the concept and characters of the construction of the lotus-bus topped stupas. In the past, stupas (Chedi) can be referred to the construction of a built structure to which people pay high respect. According to the beliefs of people in the ancient time, stupas were considered a symbol representing the Buddha, a symbol for people to remind themselves of the Buddha’s teachings, or a holy site of Buddhism. However, in the present time, stupas have changing meanings. The meanings of stupas cover wider concept. They can be referred to an architectural constructed building that reflects people’s culture and tradition, and represents a symbol of and plays role as a community center which can be generally found in many locations. Regarding this change, primarily the researcher has an assumption that the important factors for the change could be a changed conditions of the society and an attempt that people in the society adapt to the tourism industry and prepare themselves for the growth of the economic.

The study reveals that the concept behind and the characters of the lotus-bud topped stupas during this present time have been changed from the past, and represent a variety of concept. Ordinary people can build a stupa. The construction can be found in many forms, e.g. multi-purpose buildings, museums, shrines or land-spirit shrines. Some are used for containing the ancestors’ cremains for people who can afford and wish to have such construction. The change of these concept and characters of stupas could significantly start from the concept in architectural design process. It can be noted that this alteration affects the change of the characters, beliefs, and meanings of the construction of the lotus bud-topped stupas of the ancient time. This change finally leads us to the invention of the new meanings of stupas, which we have not had before.

การศึกษาเรื่องแนวคิดและรูปแบบการสร้างเจดีย์ทรงยอดดอกบัวตูมในสมัยปัจจุบัน มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นกับแนวความคิดและรูปแบบการสร้างเจดีย์ทรงยอดดอกบัวตูม ที่แต่เดิมนั้นเจดีย์มีความหมายถึงสิ่งควรค่าแก่การเคารพ ตามคติโบราณหมายถึงสัญลักษณ์แทนพระพุทธเจ้าและยังเป็นเครื่องระลึกถึงพระธรรมคำสั่งสอนของพระพุทธเจ้าหรือเป็นสถานที่อันศักดิ์สิทธิ์สำคัญในพระพุทธศาสนา หากทว่าในสมัยปัจจุบัน เจดีย์ได้มีความหมายเปลี่ยนแปลงไปเป็นอย่างมาก ความหมายของเจดีย์ครอบคลุมกว้างกว่าอดีต ซึ่งหมายรวมถึงสถาปัตยกรรมที่อาจใช้แสดงออกถึงวัฒนธรรม ประเพณี ใช้เป็นเครื่องหมายที่แสดงสัญลักษณ์และเป็นจุดศูนย์กลางของท้องถิ่น มีให้พบเห็นได้ทั่วไป ความเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นนี้ในเบื้องต้นผู้ศึกษาสันนิษฐานว่าอาจมีสาเหตุปัจจัยสำคัญมาจากสภาพสังคมเปลี่ยนแปลงไป การปรับตัวของสังคมให้สอดรับการท่องเที่ยวเพื่อรองรับการขยายตัวของเศรษฐกิจเป็นต้น

ในการศึกษาครั้งนี้ผู้ศึกษาได้ทำการเก็บข้อมูล สำรวจรูปแบบเจดีย์ทรงยอดอกบัวตูมที่สร้างขึ้นใหม่ในสมัยปัจจุบัน ที่ปรากฎในพื้นที่ต่างๆ โดยทำการแบ่งกลุ่มวิเคราะห์อย่างเป็นระบบ เพื่อให้ง่ายต่อการทำความเข้าใจนำมาเปรียบเทียบรูปแบบและวิเคราะห์การเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้น

จากการศึกษาพบว่าแนวความคิดและรูปแบบการสร้างเจดีย์ทรงยอดดอกบัวตูมในสมัยปัจจุบันนั้นมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่หลากหลาย การสร้างเจดีย์เป็นสิ่งที่สามัญชนทั่วไปก็สามารถกระทำได้สิ่งก่อสร้างต่างๆล้วนมีปรากฏในลักษณะอาคารอเนกประสงค์ พิพิธภัณฑ์ ศาลเจ้า ศาลพระภูมิ และมีใช้เป็นที่บรรจุอัฐิบุคคลหรือบรรพบุรุษของตนได้ เพียงเพราะมีกำลังทรัพย์และความปรารถนา การเปลี่ยนแปลงทางด้านแนวความคิดและรูปแบบการสร้างเจดีย์ น่าจะมีสาเหตุที่สำคัญตั้งแต่ขั้นตอนการกำหนดแนวความคิดในกระบวนการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรม อาจกล่าวได้ว่าความเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นนี้ได้ส่งผลให้รูปแบบ และความหมายการสร้างเจดีย์ทรงยอดดอกบัวตูมที่เคยมีมาแตกต่างไปจากอดีต การเปลี่ยนแปลงดังกล่าวได้นำพาไปสู่การสร้างความหมายใหม่ของเจดีย์อย่างที่ไม่เคยมีมาก่อนในที่สุด
