Abstract: This dissertation aimed at examining artistic styles, meanings, beliefs, concepts and expressions of historical and cultural context through the Rattanakosin mural paintings in Samut Songkhram province. Here are the five significant revelations: 1) The mural painting portraying previous Buddhas reflects the overlapping between Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin styles. It might connect with the belief of previous Buddhas of the Mon who migrated to Siam since Ayutthaya period. 2) The mural painting, which can be dated from King Rama III’s period, in the Hall of ancient Buddhist manuscript of Wat Bang Khae Yai reflects the collocation between artistic expression and the revitalization of Buddhist literature, e.g. Jambupati Sutra and the Buddha’s teaching towards mahishara Devaputtra in early Rattanakosin period. 3) The mural painting in a monk abode of Wat Bang Khae Yai, which once inferred that it portrayed royal duties of King Rama III when he was Prince Chetsadabodin, has been newly defined as Prince Mahasakpholasep’s troops to Siam-Burma war in 1820 as well as might be related with Khru Khong Pae, an important artist who lived in the age of king Rama III. 4) The mural painting of twenty six previous Buddhas in Wat Bang Chakreng which was painted in the age of King Rama V can be counted as an innovative painting style together with more figures of Buddha created by Somdet phra Maha Samanchao Krommaphra Paramanujit Jinoros, who became the supreme patriarch in the reign of King Rama III. 5) The art belonging to “Chang Chuen School”, which had its own characteristics and development during the age of King Rama V to King Rama VI, has been discovered in this research.
