Shophouse in Historic Urban Landscape of Phuket Old Town

Abstract

This research studies the physical characteristics of vernacular architecture in historic urban landscape of Phuket. The study focuses on on surveys, drawings, interviews and analysis architectural elements of shophouses that located along the main historical streets of Phuket. The study was conducted by collecting data from buildings that located in center of historic commercial area in Phuket. Dibuk road, Krabi road, Thalang road, Phangnga road, Ranong road, Ratsada road, Yaowarat road, Thepkasattri road, Phuket road, Soon Utis alley and Rommani alley.

This research studies 788 shophouses but researcher select only 10 shophouses that representation styles, structures, materials, spatial space and craftmanship; the result find that the typical of architectures is (1) Local shophouses type 1; this kind of buildings can be found from first settlement of oversea Chinese (2) Local shophouses type 2: evolution from local shophouses type 1 but decoration column and wall by ceramic tile (3) Shophouses eclectic style type 1; this kind of buildings has been influenced by socio economics from British Empire during The Straits Settlements were a group of British territories located in Southeast Asia established in Penang and Singapore (1901-1931) (4) Shophouses eclectic style type 2; evolution from local shophouses but decorations by luxury materials and craftsmanship. (5) Pre-modern style; replace traditional decorations by characteristic of geometry pattern (6) Early-Modern Shophouses style; this kind of buildings influence by modernism era the design of the shophouses mostly use vertical and horizontal architectural elements. (7) Modernism Shophouses; this kind of buildings are contemporary styles and some of building was built replace old shophouse.

งานศึกษาวิจัยชิ้นนี้ มุ่งเน้นการศึกษาสถาปัตยกรรมพื้นถิ่นในภูมิทัศน์ย่านประวัติศาสตร์เมืองเก่าภูเก็ต โดยทำการศึกษาในมิติของลักษณะทางกายภาพของสถาปัตยกรรมตึกแถวที่มีรูปแบบทางสถาปัตยกรรมที่โดดเด่นเป็นเอกลักษณ์นำมาเป็นตัวแทนของรูปแบบสถาปัตยกรรม ที่ตั้งอยู่ริมถนนที่มีความสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์ ภายในขอบเขตพื้นที่ย่านการค้าเก่าที่ได้กลายเป็นย่านประวัติศาสตร์เมืองเก่าภูเก็ตในปัจจุบัน โดยทำการศึกษาสถาปัตยกรรมพื้นถิ่นริมถนน 9 สาย และ 2 ซอย คือ ถนนดีบุก, ถนนกระบี่, ถนนถลาง, ถนนพังงา, ถนนระนอง, ถนนรัษฎา, ถนนเยาวราช, ถนนเทพกระษัตรี, ถนนภูเก็ต, ซอยสุ่นอุทิศและซอยรมณีย์ ผ่านการศึกษาข้อมูลภาคสนามด้วยการลงสำรวจรังวัดสถาปัตยกรรม ก่อนจัดทำแบบสถาปัตยกรรมเพื่อใช้ในการศึกษาวิเคราะห์ ควบคู่กับการศึกษาทางประวัติศาสตร์ในย่านประวัติศาสตร์เมืองเก่าภูเก็ต

การศึกษาครั้งนี้ สำรวจพบตึกแถวย่านประวัติศาสตร์เมืองเก่าภูเก็ตทั้งหมด 788 หลัง และสามารถจำแนกรูปแบบของสถาปัตยกรรมออกได้เป็น 7 รูปแบบ คือ (1) ตึกแถวแบบท้องถิ่น ระยะที่ 1 เริ่มจากผู้อาศัยชาวจีนเป็นหลัก รูปแบบทางสถาปัตยกรรมที่มีความเรียบง่าย (2) ตึกแถวแบบท้องถิ่น ระยะที่ 2 คล้ายคลึงกับช่วงแรกแต่เริ่มมีการตกแต่งเสาและผนังด้วยลวดลายปูนปั้นกระเบื้องเซรามิคเป็นรูปตุ๊กตา (3) ตึกแถวแบบสรรค์ผสาน แบบที่ 1 ได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากยุคที่อังกฤษเข้ามาปกครองปีนังและสิงคโปร์ พ.ศ.2444-2474 (4) ตึกแถวแบบสรรค์ผสาน แบบที่ 2 เป็นการพัฒนาตึกแถวมาจากบริบทท้องถิ่นสู่การก่อสร้างตึกแถวที่สะท้อนถึงความมั่งคั่งร่ำรวย (5) ตึกแถวก่อนยุคสมัยใหม่ ถูกลดทอนองค์ประกอบต่างๆ มีการตกแต่งผนังด้วยลวดลายปูนปั้น ที่เน้นลวดลายทรงเลขาคณิต (6) ตึกแถวแบบสมัยใหม่ระยะต้น ที่เน้นความเรียบ องค์ประกอบทางสถาปัตยกรรมที่มีเส้นตั้งและเส้นนอน และ (7) ตึกแถวแบบสมัยใหม่ เป็นตึกแถวสมัยใหม่ที่มีทั้งการต่อเติมปรับเปลี่ยนอาคารหรือสร้างขึ้นใหม่แทนที่อาคารเก่าในพื้นที่ย่านประวัติศาสตร์ภูเก็ต ทั้งนี้ได้คัดเลือกกรณีศึกษา จำนวน 10 หลัง เพื่อศึกษาพื้นที่ใช้สอย ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการใช้สอยอาคารกับการดำเนินชีวิตประจำวันของผู้อยู่อาศัย โครงสร้างและวัสดุการก่อสร้าง รวมถึงภูมิปัญญาเชิงช่างในตึกแถว
