GRAPHIC DESIGN INSPIRED BY NAN'S HANDMADE TEXTILE UNDER MANNER OF BUDDHISM ART

Abstract

The objectives of this research are:1)To study Nan’s textiles in various aspects such as types, patterns, weaving process and meaning under the manner of Buddhism Art.2)To study the demand for Nan’s hand-made textile in people of working age these days.3)To design a graphic under the manner of Buddhism Art and the usage of the textile that matches a modern lifestyle.

The process of this research is as follow. First, the data has been collected by three methods. The first method is researching textbooks. The second method is gathering related information in the actual site which is Nan itself. The collected issues from the site are Nan’s history, people’s belief and tradition, gathered from the society of Thai Lue Ban Ked, Pua district, Nan province. The last method is collecting information from the target customers that are people of working age by an in-depth interview. After data were collected, they are analyzed, synthesized and classified for a graphic design, which is done in Illustrator software. Finally, the design is brought to a production process to create a full piece of a hand-made textile.

The research shows the advent of Nan’s hand-made textiles has been since an ancient time when humans believed in supernatural powers. In the beginning, the purpose of the textiles was to be a medium for contacting ancestor’s spirits in traditional rituals. The patterns on the textiles were thus designed specifically for this objective and the weaving process was complex due to these elaborate patterns. After Buddhism came into Nan and had a huge amount of influence over the people in this region, the folk accepted the belief about the First Noble Truth and Trai Bhum Pra Ruang which are the popular Buddhism principles. Nan’s hand-made have changed from a medium to communicate with ancestor’s spirits to a tool to bring people to heaven.

The work has been divided into three collections which reflect Nan’s hand-made textile’s identity using the weaving and natural dyeing techniques. After interviewing and conducting a dyeing test with the folk, the researcher found that the water in Pua district which flow from Phuka mountain range has a specific acidic level. The threads dyed by the natural color from this water make Nan’s textiles outstanding from others and reflect the concept of Buddhism Art. The three collections are as follow:

Nak Phumintre Sarong: This sarong reflects the belief of the folk of Nan that Naga protects Buddhism.

Phuka Pink Flower Sarong: The pattern on this sarong is derived from the only one type of flowers in Thailand that blooms on the summit of Phuka. The researcher uses this flower in the design to convey a sense of worship of Buddhism since this flower is used as a decorative accessory on Lanna ladies’ hair when they visit Buddhism temples.

Worship Tung: Tung means “Flag” in English. In Lanna’s belief from the ancient time, Tung told a story of Chulamani in Tavatimsa Heaven. The researcher has re-designed Tung as a decoration using a triangle form.

The expert’s estimation in the graphic design inspired by Nan’s hand-made textile affirms that Nan’s textile concept, identity and a belief of the local people can be further developed to be usable in a modern lifestyle.

การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) เพื่อศึกษาผ้าทอมือจังหวัดน่าน ได้แก่ ประเภท ลวดลาย เทคนิคการทอ ความหมาย ภายใต้หลักพุทธศิลป์ 2) เพื่อศึกษาความต้องการใช้งานผ้าทอมือจังหวัดน่าน ของคนทำงานในยุคปัจจุบัน 3) เพื่อออกแบบเรขศิลป์จากผ้าทอมือจังหวัดน่านภายใต้หลักพุทธศิลป์ รวมทั้งรูปแบบการใช้งาน ให้มีความเหมาะสมกับการใช้ชีวิตของคนในยุคปัจจุบัน

วิธีการศึกษาในครั้งนี้ ผู้วิจัยศึกษาครั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยศึกษาค้นคว้าภาคเอกสาร รวมถึงการลงพื้นที่ภาคสนามในจังหวัดน่าน เพื่อเก็บข้อมูลภาคประวัติศาสตร์ ความเชื่อ ประเพณีของชาวจังหวัดน่าน ในกลุ่มทอผ้า ไทลื้อบ้านเก็ต อำเภอปัว จังหวัดน่าน และเก็บข้อมูลกลุ่มเป้าหมาย โดยเป็นกลุ่มคนทำงานในกรุงเทพมหานคร โดยการใช้แบบสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก ก่อนจะนำข้อมูลทั้งหมดมา วิเคราะห์ สังเคราะห์ จัดหมวดหมู่ ก่อนจะเข้าสู่กระบวนการออกแบบเรขศิลป์โดยใช้เครื่องมือ Illustrator มาสู่กระบวนการเทคนิคทอผ้า

ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ที่มาของลวดลายผ้าทอมือจังหวัดน่านนั้น เริ่มต้นมาตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ ที่มนุษย์นับถือธรรมชาติ ทำให้เกิดผ้าทอที่ใช้ในพิธีกรรม เพื่อเป็นสื่อกลางกับผีบรรพบุรุษซึ่งจะมีลวดลายกรรมวิธีที่เป็นแบบเฉพาะการใช้งานในพิธีกรรมเท่านั้น จนกระทั่งเมื่อความเชื่อของพุทธศาสนาเข้ามาอิทธิพลในจังหวัดน่าน จึงรับเอาความเชื่อเรื่องการ เกิด แก่ เจ็บ ตาย และไตรภูมิพระร่วง ทำให้ ผ้า เปลี่ยนบทบาทจากการสื่อสารกับผีบรรพบุรุษ มาเป็นสื่อกลางไปสู่การเดินทางไปสวรรค์

จึงสรุปผลงานออกแบบทั้งหมด 3 Collection ที่สะท้อนเอกลักษณ์โดยใช้เทคนิคการทอผ้าและการย้อมสีธรรมชาติซึ่งจากการสัมภาษณ์ และทดลองย้อมกับชาวบ้านพบว่าน้ำที่อำเภอปัว เป็นน้ำที่ไหลมาจากเทือกเขาภูคา ซึ่งมีกรดด่างต่างจากที่อื่นทำให้สีธรรมชาติที่ได้แตกต่างจากสีธรรมชาติที่ย้อมจากท้องที่อื่น เกิดเป็นเอกลักษณ์ท้องถิ่นของผ้าทอมือจังหวัดน่านและแนวคิดเรื่องพุทธศิลป์ ได้แก่ 1) ผ้าซิ่นลายนาคภูมินทร์ สะท้อนตำนานความเชื่อของชาวน่านและบทบาทของพญานาคที่คอยปกป้องพุทธศาสนา 2) ผ้าซิ่นลายดอกชมพูภูคา ดอกไม้ที่มีหนึ่งเดียวในประเทศไทยบานในจังหวัดน่านบนยอดดอยภูคา ผู้วิจัยนำมาออกแบบเพื่อสะท้อนการเกล้ามวยผมแล้วนำดอกไม้ประดับศีรษะของแม่หญิงล้านนาเมื่อแต่งกายเข้าวัด สื่อถึงการบูชาพุทธศาสนาอย่างหนึ่ง 3) ลายตุงบูชา ตุง หรือธงในภาคกลางคือสื่อสัญลักษณ์ที่มีมาแต่โบราณโดยเล่าเรื่องราวถึงเจฬีจุฬามณีบนสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ของชาวล้านนา ผู้วิจัยได้นำมาออกแบบใหม่โดยใช้ รูปแบบสามเหลี่ยมมาออกแบบเพื่อการประดับตกแต่ง

จากการประเมินผลงานการออกแบบโดยผู้เชี่ยวชาญ สามารถยืนยันสมมุติฐานได้ว่าการออกแบบ เรขศิลป์ด้วยแรงบันดาลใจจากผ้าทอมือจังหวัดน่าน สามารถต่อยอดแนวความคิด เอกลักษณ์และความเชื่อของท้องถิ่น สามารถนำมาใช้งานได้จริงในชีวิตของคนยุคปัจจุบัน
