A study role of women and men in Khmer folktales

Abstract

This study aims to a study role of women and men in Khmer folktales adopted from the collection of Khmer folktales episode 1-9 in Khmer published by Buddhist Institute issued 1959 on the title of the study role of women and men in the private and public sphere.

The findings show that there are three roles of women in the private sphere that are daughter, wife, and mother. These are supported and encouraged men in order to achieve their goals applying feminine traits according to the beliefs of Cambodian society. Regarding the role of women in public sphere, it shows that there is only one story portraying the role of people in folktales where women are able to participate in the public sphere as leadership under the condition of high levels of intelligence and societal classes. Moreover, women are still supporters of Buddhism. Another outstanding role of women is the acceptance from society in only the case of supernatural dependence.

On the other hand, the role of men can be identified in the private sphere as three figures; son, husband, and father. These illustrate the leadership, selectors, judges, and recipients. Even though they are not qualified, the women who are virtuous and noble can contribute them to be successful in life. The role of men in the public sphere illustrates the great identity which signifies the leaders of both belief and governance.

The roles of women and men in Khmer folktales portray differently based on their individual roles and diverse space indicating their values and social norm in the society in order to live their lives happily and harmoniously.

วิทยานิพนธ์เล่มนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาบทบาทของผู้หญิงและผู้ชายในนิทานพื้นบ้านเขมร จากประชุมเรื่องตำนานและนิทานพื้นบ้านเขมรภาคที่ 1 – 9 ภาษาเขมร จัดพิมพ์เผยแพร่โดยพุทธศาสนบัณฑิตย์ฉบับปี ค.ศ.1959 จำนวน 191 เรื่อง โดยจะศึกษาบทบาทของผู้หญิงและผู้ชายในพื้นที่ส่วนตัวและพื้นที่สาธารณะ

ผลการศึกษาพบว่าบทบาทของตัวละครผู้หญิงที่อยู่ในพื้นที่ส่วนตัวแสดงให้เห็นบทบาทของผู้หญิงใน 3 ฐานะ คือ 1. บทบาทผู้หญิงในฐานะบุตรสาว 2. บทบาทผู้หญิงในฐานะภรรยา และ 3.บทบาทผู้หญิงในฐานะมารดา ผู้หญิงทั้ง 3 ฐานะข้างต้นล้วนเป็นผู้คอยสนับสนุนและส่งเสริมผู้ชายให้ประสบความสำเร็จโดยอาศัยลักษณะของความเป็นกุลสตรีหรือสตรีครบลักษณ์ตามลักษณะคติความเชื่อของสังคมกัมพูชา ส่วนบทบาทผู้หญิงที่อยู่ในพื้นที่สาธารณะแสดงให้เห็นบทบาทของผู้หญิงในบทบาทประชาชน ในนิทานปรากฏว่ามีผู้หญิงสามารถเข้าไปมีส่วนร่วมในพื้นที่สาธารณะในฐานะของการเป็นผู้นำเพียง 1 เรื่อง ซึ่งผู้หญิงนั้นต้องสมบูรณ์พร้อมด้วยสติปัญญาและเป็นชนชั้นสูง นอกจากนั้นผู้หญิงยังอยู่ในฐานะของผู้ค้ำจุนพุทธศาสนา ฐานะของผู้หญิงที่โดดเด่นอีกประการหนึ่งที่ได้รับการยอมรับจากสังคมในฐานะที่พึ่งพาในรูปแบบของสิ่งเหนือธรรมชาติเท่านั้น

ส่วนบทบาทของตัวละครผู้ชายที่อยู่ในพื้นที่ส่วนตัวแสดงให้เห็นบทบาทของผู้ชายใน 3 ฐานะ คือ 1. บทบาทผู้ชายในฐานะบุตรชาย 2. บทบาทผู้ชายในฐานะสามี และ 3. บทบาทผู้ชายในฐานะบิดา ผู้ชายทั้ง 3 ฐานะข้างต้นล้วนเป็นผู้นำ ผู้เลือก ผู้ตัดสินและผู้รับการปรนนิบัติ แม้ว่าบางครั้งตัวละครผู้ชายจะขาดลักษณะของการเป็นผู้ชายที่สมบูรณ์หรือเป็นผู้ชายครบลักษณ์ก็ตาม แต่ด้วยความที่มีผู้หญิงที่เป็นกุลสตรีช่วยให้สามารถประสบความสำเร็จในชีวิตได้ ส่วนบทบาทผู้ชายที่อยู่ในพื้นที่สาธารณะมีบทบาทเป็นอย่ามาก นับว่าเป็นพื้นที่ที่ผู้ชายมีบทบาทอย่างยิ่ง ผู้ชายดำรงตนในฐานะผู้นำทั้งสิ้นไม่ว่าจะเป็นผู้นำทางด้านความเชื่อ และผู้นำทางการปกครอง

บทบาทของผู้หญิงและผู้ชายในนิทานพื้นบ้านเขมรต่างดำรงตนตามบทบาทและฐานะของตนสอดคล้องกับค่านิยมและจารีตในสังคม ใช้ชีวิตอยู่ร่วมกันแสดงบทบาทของตนตามพื้นที่และฐานะที่ตนดำรงอยู่อันเป็นกติกาที่ทำให้อยู่ร่วมกันอย่างปกติสุข
