Abstract: In the reign of King Rama III, there were various themes and artistic styles used in murals. The selected themes show the relationship with the historical background of each temple. Normally, most of the murals followed the Thai traditional way, such as the paintings of the Buddha’s life, the Buddha’s ten previous lives (Jataka) and Buddhist cosmology. This group of paintings focuses on the story of the Lord Buddha and on the establishment of the building as the center of universe. However, the artisans employed the new artistic styles for paintings these aforementioned themes; the scenes were painted continuously on the four side walls, which led the artisans to have some more space for painting many more details. Another interesting theme is Mahosot Jataka (one of the Buddha’s ten previous lives). Unlike the past, this story was painted as the main theme of the ordination hall of Wat Phrachetuphon probably due to the purpose of establishing this temple as the center of knowledge including medicine. In the same temple, the theme of the Lord Buddha’s great disciples and Mahavamsa should be related to the court’s aim to promote education among people and revitalize Buddhism. As for the styles, the artisans employed both Thai traditional and new artistic styles to paint some characters in the paintings, such as the three daughter of the Great Demons. The chronological order was not in accordance with the Buddhist scriptures but with the Thai convention in the past. Some painting techniques were invented during this period, such as painting one story on the four side walls continuously. Moreover, like the past, the artisans still gave an importance on symmetry but employed a new way. In the previous times, either the scene of subduing Mara or the Buddhist cosmology was chosen and painted on the middle part of the rear wall. Nevertheless, the artisans of King Rama III either followed the traditional way or painted the scene of a big city instead. The change in the murals during the reign of King Rama III reflected the influx of Chinese influence in the early stage and then that of the western one in the later period. This phenomenon had an impact on the murals in the era of King Rama IV, during which the murals show the western influence much more than the previous reign.
