An Analysis of Ella Fitzgerald's Improvisation On One Note Samba, Air Mail Special, How High The Moon and It Don't Mean a Thing

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to study Ella Fitzgerald’s improvisations on the following songs 1) One Note Samba 2) Air Mail Special 3) How High The Moon 4) It Don’t Mean a Thing. The method of this research is to transcribe and examine her uses of rhythms and scales.

Ella Fitzgerald used half- note to end phrases; quarter notes to emphasize pulses; and eighth-notes and syncopations for accentuating swing rhythms.

Ella Fitzgerald chose to use scales, modes, and arpeggios that correlate with roots of chords, and by using repetitions, the characteristic notes of the scales were emphasized. In addition, she used the chromatic scale to create continuity in the improvised lines.

งานวิจัยฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาและวิเคราะห์การสแกตของ เอลลา ฟิทซ์เจอรัลด์ โดยเลือกวิเคราะห์จากบทเพลงจำนวน 4 บทเพลงได้แก่ 1) One Note Samba 2) Air Mail Special 3) How High The Moon และ 4) It Don’t Mean a Thing ด้วยวิธีการถอดเสียงและวิเคราะห์โดยพิจารณาจากลักษณะจังหวะต่าง ๆ และการใช้โน้ตจากบันไดเสียง เอลลา ฟิทซ์เจอรัลด์ ใช้โน้ตตัวขาวเพื่อชะลอจังหวะก่อนที่จะหยุดประโยค และใช้โน้ตในคอร์ดที่เป็นโน้ตตัวดำเพื่อแสดงให้เห็นถึงชีพจรจังหวะและใช้โน้ต​เขบ็ตหนึ่งชั้นและจังหวะขัดเพื่อเน้นจังหวะสวิง
