Important Techniques for Playing Low Horn

Abstract

This performance - focused research aimed to elucidate useful techniques for creating high - quality low horn sounds for the purpose of performing low horn repertoire in a public recital. The researcher chose two specific pieces for solo horn performance: Bagatelle for low horn and piano composed by Hermann Neuling, and Concerto for low horn composed by Kerry Turner. As a conceptual framework in analyzing low horn performance techniques, the researcher consulted Eli Epstein, David Nesmith, Randy C. Gardner and conducted interviews with professional horn players.

The research revealed a range of important techniques for playing low horn, namely: characteristics of horn sound in the low register, breathing, embouchure, vowels pronunciation, jaw position, and articulation. These techniques can enhance the tone, precision, and flexibility of the low horn, and have been applied in pieces composed for low horn. The present results guide the horn player in his or her process of creating good low horn sound qualities.
