Conversation with Pin Pia : Equilibrium of Inner Mind and Outer World

Abstract

This thesis is conducted under the purpose to create and study sound art in cultural and archaeological space in 3 aspects:

1. Site – specific art representing interrelationship among picture, sound, as well as cultural and religious context of Pin Pia, Lanna chest – resonated stick zither. The purpose is to create balance between body and the musical instrument, inner spirit and the environment, with soft sound of the stick zither.

2. Integration of knowledge in art, music and archaeology with sound art, specifically sound installation and live music on a specific site.

3. Social, religious and cultural roles of the ancient Lanna musical instrument Phin Pia in ethnomusicology, music sound and silent sound in art.

Developing economy and society have introduced noises of modern devices in the community, as well as its ambience. As vociferation has turned an acquaintance of modern people, quietude is gradually driven away from the city’s surrounding and only lingers in a glimpse of daily grind. Roles of soft sound are consequently major idea in this thesis, which aims to reflect concepts and philosophy in abstract volume. Distinct sound of folk musical instrument Pin Pia is the major component with the historical context of the space as the framework. People are linked to their surrounding with picture, sound and experience with the art work. Eventually this creative research has suggested that in Buddhist philosophy, serene voice is meaningful. Soothing sound of Phin Pia awakes conscious of diversity when the audiences well balance old and new existences, the past and the present. The inner soul is then interwoven to the outer environment on the specific site.

การวิจัยสร้างสรรค์นี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาค้นคว้าเกี่ยวกับผลงานศิลปะเสียงในพื้นที่เฉพาะทางวัฒนธรรมและโบราณคดีใน 3 ประเด็น คือ

1. รูปแบบงานศิลปะที่นำเสนอความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง ภาพ เสียง และบริบทของพื้นที่เฉพาะ (site-specific) ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับ “เปี๊ยะ” หรือ “พิณเปี๊ยะ” ในทางศาสนาและศิลปวัฒนธรรม เพื่อสร้างความสมดุลระหว่างร่างกายและเครื่องดนตรี ความรู้สึกภายในกับสิ่งแวดล้อมภายนอก ผ่านความเงียบเบาของเสียงเปี๊ยะ

2. การบูรณาการองค์ความรู้ทางศิลปะ ดนตรี และโบราณคดีผ่านผลงานศิลปะเสียง (sound art) ในรูปแบบซาวด์อินสตอลเลชั่น (sound installation) และการแสดงศิลปะและดนตรีสด (live music) บนพื้นที่เฉพาะ

3. บทบาททางสังคม ศาสนา และวัฒนธรรม ของเปี๊ยะผ่านแนวคิดมานุษยวิทยาการดนตรี และบทบาทของเสียง ดนตรี และความเงียบเบาในงานศิลปะ

จากพัฒนาการทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคมที่ได้นำเสียงของเครื่องมืออุปกรณ์สมัยใหม่เข้ามาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชุมชนและสภาพแวดล้อม ความดังของเสียงกลายเป็นความคุ้นชินของผู้คนในปัจจุบัน ในขณะที่ความเงียบเบาของสภาพแวดล้อมค่อย ๆ ถอยตัวออกห่างจากสังคมเมืองและแทรกตัวอยู่ในบางชั่วขณะของชีวิตประจำวัน บทบาทของความเงียบเบาของเสียงจึงเป็นประเด็นสำคัญของผลงานวิทยานิพนธ์ชิ้นนี้ที่จะสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงประเด็นทางความคิดและปรัชญาที่แฝงอยู่ในเสียงที่ไม่สามารถจับต้องได้ โดยนำเสียงของเครื่องดนตรีพื้นบ้านล้านนาอย่าง “เปี๊ยะ” ที่มีเอกลักษณะเฉพาะตัวมาเป็นองค์ประกอบหลักในงานศิลปะ ใช้บริบททางประวัติศาสตร์ของพื้นที่มาเป็นกรอบทางความคิดในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานเพื่อสร้างความเชื่อมโยงระหว่างผู้คนกับสิ่งรอบกาย การวิจัยสร้างสรรค์ชิ้นนี้พบว่า ความเงียบเบาของเสียงยังคงมีความสำคัญในเชิงปรัชญาพระพุทธศาสนา เสียงเปี๊ยะสามารถสร้างความรู้สึกสงบ ระงับ กระตุ้นให้รู้และเข้าใจในความต่าง วางตนอยู่บนความสมดุลระหว่างความเก่าและใหม่ อดีตและปัจจุบัน สิ่งที่อยู่ภายในและภายนอกที่สอดประสานถักทออยู่ร่วมกันในพื้นที่ ผ่านภาพ เสียง และประสบการณ์ในผลงานศิลปะ
