Abstract: This research explores the use of evocation and imagery as the main creative motivators behind Impressionist music, namely that of Claude Debussy and Billy Strayhorn. These methods will then be used in the composition of an original 25-minute, three-movement piece for solo vocalist, tenor saxophone, piano, bass, drum kit, and string sextet (two violins, two violas, two cellos). The piece was then performed live, free, and open to the public. The emotional reactions of different audience members were then recorded to examine the music’s ability to communicate with a diverse group of listeners.
