Intentional context in urban and architectural design: An analysis of exclusive and inclusive demarcation in contemporary society.

Abstract

This dissertation aims to investigate the notion of intentional context in the processes of urban and architectural design. It posits that spatial demarcation is not merely a physical mechanism or a technical outcome of planning, but rather a condition imbued with intentions, values, and ideologies of designers—expressed through spatial forms that are dynamic and deeply interwoven with social contexts.

The study proposes the conceptual framework of intentional demarcation as a lens to analyze spatial boundaries that are deliberately constructed with specific aims. These boundaries—manifesting as either exclusive or inclusive demarcations—are interpreted not only as design elements but also as instruments of participation, control, exclusion, or negotiation of meanings between designers and users within a given space.

Twelve case studies across urban to architectural scales are analyzed using a three-dimensional framework—architectural demarcation, demarcation characteristics, and contextual–intentional correlation—revealing a spectrum of boundary conditions, from rigid to fluid and distinct to blurred, shaped by economic, social, and cultural dynamics.

Findings reveal that spatial boundaries in contemporary design are dynamic tools that express power, encourage engagement, and reflect socio-spatial imaginaries, with the concept of intentional context highlighting space as a performative site of interaction between structures, symbols, and daily practices.

The dissertation reframes boundary‑making as an inclusive spatial practice that bridges differences to guide the creation of just, resilient urban and architectural environments.

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อสำรวจและทำความเข้าใจ “บริบทเชิงเจตนา” (Intentional Context) ในกระบวนการออกแบบเมืองและสถาปัตยกรรม โดยเสนอว่าการแบ่งเขตเชิงพื้นที่ (spatial demarcation) มิใช่เพียงกลไกเชิงกายภาพหรือผลลัพธ์ของการวางผังเท่านั้น หากแต่เป็นภาวะที่แฝงเจตจำนง ค่านิยม และอุดมการณ์ของผู้ออกแบบซึ่งถูกสื่อสารผ่านรูปแบบเชิงพื้นที่ที่มีพลวัตและมีความสัมพันธ์กับบริบททางสังคมอย่างแนบแน่น

ในการศึกษานี้ ผู้วิจัยได้เสนอกรอบแนวคิด “การแบ่งเขตเชิงเจตนา” (Intentional Demarcation) เพื่อวิเคราะห์การกำหนดขอบเขตของพื้นที่ที่มีจุดมุ่งหมายเฉพาะ อันสะท้อนผ่านรูปแบบของการแบ่งเขตแบบจำแนกเฉพาะ (Exclusive Demarcation) และแบบครอบคลุม (Inclusive Demarcation) โดยชี้ให้เห็นว่าเส้นแบ่งเขตในฐานะองค์ประกอบเชิงออกแบบนั้น สามารถทำหน้าที่ทั้งในการสร้างการมีส่วนร่วม การกีดกัน การควบคุม หรือแม้กระทั่งการเจรจาต่อรองความหมายระหว่างผู้ออกแบบกับผู้ใช้งานในพื้นที่หนึ่ง ๆ ได้อย่างมีนัยสำคัญ

งานวิจัยนี้ดำเนินการวิเคราะห์ผ่านกรณีศึกษา 12 กรณี แบ่งออกเป็นระดับเมือง ย่าน โครงการ และองค์ประกอบทางสถาปัตยกรรม โดยใช้กรอบการวิเคราะห์ 3 มิติ ได้แก่ ระดับของการแบ่งเขต (Architectural Level), คุณลักษณะของการแบ่งเขต (Demarcation Characteristics) และความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างเจตนากับบริบท (Contextual–Intentional Correlation) เพื่อเปิดเผยลักษณะของเส้นแบ่งที่มีความหลากหลายทั้งในด้านความตายตัวและความยืดหยุ่น ความชัดเจนและความพร่าเลือน รวมถึงการเปลี่ยนผ่านเชิงนัยยะที่เกิดจากพลวัตทางเศรษฐกิจ สังคม และวัฒนธรรม

ผลการศึกษาชี้ให้เห็นว่า เส้นแบ่งในงานออกแบบร่วมสมัยมิใช่สิ่งที่ตายตัวหรือสื่อความหมายเพียงด้านเดียว แต่คือเครื่องมือทางสถาปัตยกรรมที่สามารถสะท้อนและเจรจาความสัมพันธ์เชิงอำนาจ การมีส่วนร่วม และจินตภาพทางสังคมได้อย่างลึกซึ้ง แนวคิด “บริบทเชิงเจตนา” จึงเป็นข้อเสนอสำคัญในการมองพื้นที่ไม่ใช่เพียงสิ่งที่ถูกออกแบบ หากแต่เป็นเวทีของการต่อรองระหว่างโครงสร้าง สัญลักษณ์ และการกระทำของผู้คนในชีวิตประจำวัน

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จึงมิได้เพียงวิเคราะห์รูปแบบทางกายภาพของขอบเขต หากแต่ชี้ให้เห็นศักยภาพของการออกแบบเส้นแบ่งให้เป็นพื้นที่เชื่อมโยงความแตกต่าง โดยไม่จำเป็นต้องลบเลือนความหลากหลาย อันเป็นเครื่องมือสำคัญในการออกแบบเมืองและสถาปัตยกรรมที่เป็นธรรมและยั่งยืนในยุคร่วมสมัย
