Flexible Architecture For Contemporary Market

Abstract

From the past to the present, markets have served as spaces for the exchange of goods and services and as centers of social interaction. With rapid changes in economic, social, and technological contexts, traditional markets have evolved beyond commercial roles to reflect modern lifestyles and diverse user needs. Today’s markets function not only as economic spaces but also as vibrant social and cultural hubs that connect communities with urban life.In response, architectural design must embrace flexibility, allowing spaces to adapt over time and to different contexts. This thesis explores the concepts and transformations in modern market architecture and proposes adaptable design approaches for various local contexts in Thailand. The aim is to develop market spaces that are dynamic, community-oriented, and sustainable—functioning as both commercial centers and public spaces that respond effectively to the changing demands of contemporary urban society.

The study finds that market architecture should be flexible, adapting to time, users, environment, and activities. Modern markets should function not only as commercial hubs but also as public spaces that support diverse community needs and changing urban lifestyles.

This thesis proposes combining market spaces with public parks to create open areas that support diverse activities and leisure. Flexible design allows temporary functional changes, such as transforming a park into a market, reinterpreting traditional market typologies. Beyond rearranging space, this approach fosters new connections between people and the city, encourages public participation, and promotes creative, adaptable, and truly responsive urban public spaces.

ตั้งแต่ในอดีตจนถึงปัจจุบันตลาดนั้นเป็นพื้นที่แลกเปลี่ยนสินค้าและบริการโดยศูนย์กลางการค้าขายและปฏิสัมพันธ์ทางสังคมจึงต้องปรับตัวเพื่อรองรับความต้องการที่หลากหลายของผู้ใช้งาน สภาพเศรษฐกิจ สังคม และเทคโนโลยีเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างรวดเร็ว ซึ่งตลาดแบบเดิมเป็นศูนย์กลางการค้าขายสินค้าและปัจจุบันได้พัฒนาไปสู่บทบาทใหม่ในฐานะพื้นที่ที่ตอบสนองต่อไลฟ์สไตล์ ความต้องการ และประสบการณ์ของผู้ใช้งานที่หลากหลาย พื้นที่ตลาดสมัยใหม่จึงไม่เพียงแต่เป็นพื้นที่ทางเศรษฐกิจเท่านั้นแต่ยังเป็นพื้นที่ทางสังคมและวัฒนธรรมที่มีชีวิตชีวา และเป็นพื้นที่เชื่อมโยงระหว่างชุมชนกับเมือง ดังนั้นการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมที่ตอบสนองต่อความเปลี่ยนแปลงดังกล่าวจำเป็นต้องมีคุณลักษณะ “ยืดหยุ่น”ที่สามารถปรับเปลี่ยนได้ตามบริบทและช่วงเวลา

วิทยานิพนธ์เล่มนี้จึงมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาแนวความคิด รูปแบบและการเปลี่ยนแปลงในการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมพื้นที่ตลาดสมัยใหม่ โดยเป็นแนวทางในการพัฒนาการออกแบบพื้นที่ตลาดสมัยใหม่ที่สามารถประยุกต์ใช้กับตลาดในบริบทต่าง ๆ ของประเทศไทยไทย เพื่อให้ตลาดเป็นพื้นที่ที่มีชีวิต ปรับตัวได้ และยั่งยืนในระยะยาวและสอดคล้องกับความต้องการและช่วงเวลาที่เปลี่ยนแปลง

จากการศึกษาพบว่า สถาปัตยกรรมที่เหมาะกับตลาดสมัยใหม่ควรมีความยืดหยุ่น เพื่อรองรับฟังก์ชันที่หลากหลายและสามารถปรับเปลี่ยนตามเวลา ผู้ใช้งาน สภาพแวดล้อม หรือกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ ทั้งยังสามารถทำหน้าที่เป็นศูนย์กลางทางการค้าควบคู่กับการเป็นพื้นที่สาธารณะของชุมชน จึงได้เสนอแนวความคิดในการออกแบบพื้นที่ตลาดให้มีความยืดหยุ่นโดยผสมผสานรวมเข้ากับสวนสาธารณะเพื่อให้เป็นพื้นที่เปิดโล่งที่รองรับทั้งการพักผ่อนและกิจกรรมหลากหลาย รวมถึงสามารถปรับเปลี่ยนฟังก์ชันชั่วคราว เช่น การเปลี่ยนสวนให้กลายเป็นตลาด ตามความต้องการของชุมชนเมือง ซึ่งเป็นตัวอย่างของการออกแบบที่ท้าทายขอบเขตเดิมของสถาปัตยกรรมประเภทตลาด การสร้างพื้นที่ที่มีความยืดหยุ่นดังกล่าว จึงไม่ใช่เพียงแค่การจัดฟังก์ชันใหม่ของพื้นที่ แต่เป็นการออกแบบเพื่อสร้างความสัมพันธ์ใหม่ ระหว่างคนกับเมือง ที่เปิดโอกาสให้คนมีส่วนร่วมกับพื้นที่ได้มากยิ่งขึ้นและผลักดันให้เกิดรูปแบบพื้นที่สาธารณะที่สร้างสรรค์ ยืดหยุ่น และตอบสนองต่อเมืองสมัยใหม่ได้อย่างแท้จริง
