The Commodification of Thai Dance : A Case Study of Petjaratsang

Abstract

"Thai Dance" is a cultural performing art of Thailand that has evolved to keep up with current condition and involved with many dynamic factors, leading to social phenomena. The objective of this study was to investigate the factors contributing to cultural capital formation towards the commodification of culture in Thai dance under the case study of Phetcharatsaeng Band that lead to the understanding of the way of thinking and the model of cultural resources of the performing arts for the development in current society.

The results of this study showed that Thai dance, context of cultural goods is a path of creating value from cultural values of Thai dance and music that generates income to Phetcharatsaeng Band led by Mr. Pongpan Phetthong as known as " Aon Phetcharatsaeng”. The origin derived from the profession of Thai traditional dance and music ass cultural capital, formal educational system of Thai dance and music and non-formal educational system from Mr. Sathian Duangchanthip who transmitted the knowledge of Thai dance and the way of thinking regarding social being. Cultural capitals were used to enhance experience and development into the commodification of culture, leading to the development of performing arts, that is “Contemporary Thai Dance", in Phetcharatsaeng Band style that has been adjusted to current society towards business processes including production and selling as well as the stabilization of unique cultural goods of Phetcharatsaeng Band.

Lastly, from the results of studying the case study of Phetcharatsaeng Band, it’s obvious that commodification of culture in Thai dance took long time. Institute of Dramatic Art educates and builds the understandings, appreciate culture resources and passion for arts and culture. The dedication to hard training is required to acquire skilled expertise. Commodification requires proper adaptation, maintains identity and tradition of Thai dance that is the code of conduct of the artists, leading to value balance.

“นาฏศิลป์ไทย” คือวัฒนธรรมการแสดงศิลปะการร่ายรำของไทย มีการพัฒนาปรับตัวกับยุคปัจจุบันมีพลวัตปัจจัยหลายด้านที่ทำให้เกิดปรากฏการณ์ทางสังคม งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยอันเป็นการก่อตัวทุนทางวัฒนธรรม จนนำมาสู่กระบวนการทำวัฒนธรรมให้เป็นสินค้าในนาฏศิลป์ไทย กรณีศึกษาคณะเพชรจรัสแสง อันนำไปสู่ความเข้าใจ วิธีคิด และต้นแบบของทรัพยากรทางวัฒนธรรมด้านการแสดงต่อการพัฒนาในสังคมปัจจุบัน

ผลศึกษาพบว่า นาฏศิลป์ไทยบริบทสินค้าทางวัฒนธรรมเป็นเส้นทางของการสร้างมูลค่าจากคุณค่าทางวัฒนธรรมนาฏศิลป์และดนตรี นำมาสู่รายได้แก่กลุ่มคณะเพชรจรัสแสง ผู้ขับเคลื่อน คือ นายพงศ์พันธ์ เพชรทอง หรือ “อ้น เพชรจรัสแสง” โดยมีจุดเริ่มต้นจากวิชาชีพนาฏศิลป์ดนตรีไทยแบบประเพณีนิยมเป็นทุนทางวัฒนธรรมจากระบบการศึกษาด้านการแสดงนาฏศิลป์ดนตรีและนอกระบบการศึกษาจากนายเสถียร ดวงจันทร์ทิพย์ ถ่ายทอดองค์ความรู้ทางด้านดนตรีไทยรวมไปถึงวิธีคิดการเป็นอยู่ในสังคม จนนำทุนทางวัฒนธรรมทั้งหมดมาสร้างประสบการณ์พัฒนาผนวกกับทุนทางวัฒนธรรม พัฒนาสู่กระบวนการทำวัฒนธรรมให้เป็นสินค้าทางวัฒนธรรม ทำให้เกิดพัฒนาการของการแสดงคือ “นาฏศิลป์ไทยร่วมสมัย” ฉบับเพชรจรัสแสงปรับตัวให้เข้ากับคนในสังคมปัจจุบันเพื่อนำมาสู่กระบวนการธุรกิจ มีกระบวนการผลิต การขาย และการรักษาเสถียรภาพของสินค้าทางวัฒนธรรมเฉพาะตัวของคณะเพชรจรัสแสง

ท้ายสุด จากการศึกษาดังกล่าวผ่านกรณีศึกษาคณะเพชรจรัสแสง ทำให้ประจักษ์ชัดว่ากระบวนการทำวัฒนธรรมให้เป็นสินค้าในนาฏศิลป์ไทยต้องอาศัยระยะเวลา สถาบันการศึกษาด้านการแสดงนาฏศิลป์ สร้างการเรียนรู้และความเข้าใจ เห็นคุณค่าของทรัพยากรทางวัฒนธรรมและมีใจรักกับศิลปวัฒนธรรมอย่างมาก ทุ่มเทกับการฝึกฝนอย่างหนักจนมีทักษะอย่างชำนาญ เพราะการก่อตัวเป็นสินค้าจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งคือมีประยุกต์อย่างเหมาะสม คงคุณค่าอัตลักษณ์ จารีตของนาฏศิลป์ไทยยึดถือเป็นจรรยาบรรณของศิลปิน เกิดสมดุลของคุณค่าและมูลค่าไปพร้อมกันได้อย่างสมบูรณ์
