Abstract: The community of Wualai has a long history as the origin of silverware handcraft in Chiang Mai province. The purpose of this research was to study the history of the relationship between the community itself and the silverware handcraft by identifying and analyzing the identity of the community into the contemporary jewelry design process. The research started from collecting document as secondary data, followed by the survey of actual area as primary data. After that, they were identified and analyzed into 5 significant values as followed: historical value, aesthetic value, scientific value, social value, and spiritual value. Then they were synthesized to a conclusion that leaded to the design process to contemporary jewelry. There are 4 sets in the collection, 13 life periods prays of Lord Buddha that divided by seasonal themes. The combination of materials such as silver, copper, aluminum, and wood were chosen based on the community’s tradition, identity and relationship between them as Lanna cultural heritage. It is significant by the Jataka Dharma determination of the year, month and birthdate which according to the belief of Lanna people about timing, stars that depicted all four weather seasons. During the Songkran or The Lanna New Year Festival, prayers conducted pray as it is considered a fresh beginning to have a good life throughout that year. The jewelry collection represents prospectus and good fortune according to the beliefs of the people in the community. In conclusion, the result presents the way of life, art and cultural heritage and develops into contemporary jewelry that reflects the obvious identity of the Wualai community to promote the preservation of cultural identity, as well as to show the appreciation of local wisdoms and knowledge.
ชุมชนวัวลาย เป็นชุมชนที่มีประวัติความเป็นมาอันยาวนาน ถือเป็นแหล่งต้นกำเนิดงานหัตถกรรมเครื่องเงินที่มีชื่อเสียงของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ การวิจัยในครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาประวัติความเป็นมา และความสัมพันธ์ของชุมชนวัวลายที่มีต่องานหัตถกรรมเครื่องเงิน โดยได้มุ่งเน้นการศึกษาไปที่อัตลักษณ์ของชุมชนวัวลาย จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เพื่อนำมาสร้างสรรค์เป็นผลงานเครื่องประดับร่วมสมัย กระบวนการในการวิจัย มีขั้นตอนของการเก็บข้อมูลที่เริ่มต้นจากการค้นคว้าข้อมูลในเชิงเนื้อหา และตามด้วยการศึกษาข้อมูลในเชิงปฏิบัติ โดยการลงพื้นที่ชุมชนวัวลาย รวบรวมข้อมูลที่ได้มาทำการวิเคราะห์ เพื่อจำแนกอัตลักษณ์ของชุมชนออกเป็นคุณค่า สรุปได้ 4 ข้อ คือ คุณค่าด้านประวัติศาสตร์ คุณค่าด้านสุนทรียะและความงาม คุณค่าด้านภูมิปัญญาเชิงช่าง คุณค่าด้านวัฒนธรรม และจิตวิญญาณ  ทำการสังเคราะห์เพื่อให้ได้ข้อสรุป และนำไปสู่กระบวนการสร้างสรรค์ชิ้นงานเครื่องประดับ ซึ่งแบ่งเป็น 4 ชุด ตามการแบ่งกลุ่มช่วงเวลาการสวด 13 กัณฑ์เทศน์ มีรูปแบบตามฤดูกาล รวมถึงวัสดุที่เลือกใช้มีการผสมผสานกันระหว่างโลหะเงิน ทองแดง อลูมิเนียม และไม้ ซึ่งมีที่มาจากแนวคิดของความสัมพันธ์ที่มีในชุมชน โดยมีที่มาจากเรื่องราวของประเพณีเทศน์มหาชาติแบบล้านนา ซึ่งเป็นประเพณีที่ชาวบ้านวัวลายให้ความสำคัญ และยังคงมีการสืบต่อกันอยู่ นิยมเริ่มจัดการสวดในช่วงเทศกาลสงกรานต์ หรือเทศกาลปีใหม่เมือง ซึ่งถือเป็นการเริ่มต้นชีวิตใหม่ให้ได้มีชีวิตที่ดีไปตลอดทั้งปี เครื่องประดับชุดนี้จึงสร้างสรรค์ขึ้นเปรียบเสมือนตัวแทนของความเป็นสิริมงคลตามความเชื่อของคนในชุมชนวัวลาย การวิจัยในครั้งนี้ ได้นำเรื่องราวของชุมชนหัตถกรรมเครื่องเงินวัวลาย มาทำการผสมผสานถ่ายทอดออกมาในรูปแบบเครื่องประดับร่วมสมัย โดยยังคงการใช้เทคนิคการผลิตของชุมชนวัวลาย ทั้งนี้จุดประสงค์เพื่อเป็นการอนุรักษ์เทคนิคการทำเครื่องเงินของชุมชนวัวลายไว้ ร่วมกับเป็นการพัฒนาการออกแบบเครื่องประดับร่วมสมัยที่สามารถประยุกต์การใช้งานได้ในโอกาสต่างๆ ซึ่งผู้วิจัยหวังว่าจะได้เป็นการช่วยอนุรักษ์เทคนิคภูมิปัญญาเชิงช่าง และยังได้เป็นการสร้างความรู้ ความเข้าใจในศิลปวัฒนธรรม ภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่น ของชุมชนวัวลายผ่านชิ้นงานเครื่องประดับรูปแบบใหม่ เพื่อให้เป็นที่รู้จักจากบุคคลทั่วไปเพิ่มมากขึ้น ซึ่งในอนาคตอาจจะนำไปเป็นแนวทางในการพัฒนาออกแบบเครื่องประดับในรูปแบบอื่นต่อไป
